Yorkshire Flood and Coastal Committee seeks new member

People with expertise in coastal issues and processes are being urged to find out about a role on a committee in Yorkshire.

The Environment Agency is looking for a new member to join the Yorkshire Regional Flood and Coastal Committee (YRFCC) which covers the major river catchments in north, west, south and east Yorkshire, as well as the coast.

RFCCs are committees set up by the government to replace Regional Flood Defence Committees. They decide on local priorities, raise local levies and approve programmes of work. They also support the Environment Agency and local authorities in working with communities and others to identify and raise funding.

Phil Younge, regional flood and coastal manager for the Environment Agency in Yorkshire and the North East said:

“This is an exciting chance to play an important local role in guiding flood and coastal activities. The committee needs to have a balance of skills, knowledge and experience across its membership."

The Committee is now looking for a sixth member who can demonstrate significant knowledge of coastal issues and processes, including a working knowledge of shoreline management plans, coastal strategies and integrated coastal zone management.

RFCCs play a vital part in the government’s new partnership approach to flood funding where communities and local authorities are encouraged to financially contribute towards a flood scheme in their area.

The committee will also build on the work started by the former Yorkshire Regional Flood Defence Committee which, since 2005, has delivered schemes through a levy on local authorities. In that time, more than £7 million has been raised to deliver innovative partnership projects that do not qualify for grant-in-aid funding.Committee members don’t receive a salary but expenses are paid.

RFCCs meet four times a year with occasional sub-group work between official meetings. How to applyThe deadline for applications is 6 February 2012, with interviews taking place in March in Leeds.

Regional Flood and Coastal Committees were established by the Flood and Water Management Act 2010.There are eleven committees in England and one in Wales.
