ACWA originally won a specialist £1 million subcontract last year from main contractor Mott MacDonald Bentley to construct an additional sludge digester at the site, convert an old liquid sludge import tank into a digester feed tank and deliver a biogas mixing facility and associated pipework.
ACWA also provided a heat exchanger and advanced monitoring and control instrumentation that enabled temperature and level control data for the new digester to be collected and utilised to ensure even sludge warming.
Project manager Jim Clabour said:
‘Yorkshire Water was so impressed by the performance of the monitoring and control instrumentation that the company decided to install the same system at Naburn’s original three sludge digesters, whose heating systems were not working optimally.’
The monitoring and control system measures the temperature and flow of the recirculated sludge and the temperature and flow of incoming and outgoing hot water in the heat exchanger, optimising the quantity and flow of water to ensure the sludge temperature remains constant.
The monitoring capability will ensure that Yorkshire Water is able to understand the operation of the heating process in each digester, and act to resolve any potential issues before they become problematic.
Mr Clabour added:
‘We are delighted to be involved in this project, and that the level of satisfaction with our original efforts has provided us with this new opportunity to work for such a prestigious client.’
